Hollola Municipality website revamp

Hollola Municipality is located in the Päijät-Häme region and has a population of around 23,000 residents. The municipality’s brand had already been updated a few years ago, and it was now time to reflect this brand in their web service. The previous technology of the service was outdated, and WordPress was chosen as the new platform.

Starting points

The Hollola municipality’s website was outdated: new pages and structures had been added on top of the existing service, resulting in a fragmented and difficult-to-navigate system. The foundation for the new website was user-centricity and clarity. The redesign aimed to keep mobile users, who make up nearly 75% of all website users, in mind. Additionally, there was a desire to bring the organisation closer to end-users. The municipality’s target groups included not only residents but also tourists, decision-makers and media, prospective residents and summer residents, as well as businesses and potential businesses operating in Hollola. Furthermore, the target groups included other communities and associations, real estate agents, and Hollola municipality employees.

The Hollola municipality’s brand identity had already been updated earlier, so the old website had also been refreshed as part of this redesign. The new service was expected to feature even stronger brand visibility, including the bold use of icons and illustrations.

Solution

The Hollola municipality’s new website was implemented using WordPress. The goal was to keep the user interface simple and as user-friendly as possible. Considering mobile users, the design phase resulted in placing the main navigation behind a menu icon and utilising various landing pages as part of different user pathways.

Service data repository keeps content up-to-date

The municipality’s information is extensively managed in the Suomi.fi service, also known as the service data repository (PTV), where municipalities and other public and private sector actors can list their services and interaction channels. For municipalities, this includes services provided by different municipal units, associated interaction channels, and contact details. You can explore the service data repository on the Digital and Population Data Services Agency’s website. For the Hollola municipality website, the integration was implemented as a one-way process, meaning that data updated in Suomi.fi is pushed to the website once a day. On the website, content can be featured on specific pages using content blocks, just like any other content.

Contact information updates via AD

The Hollola municipality’s employee logins and contact information management were implemented in the website through Azure AD integration. This means that individual contact information changes only need to be updated in one place, ensuring that the information is always up to date.

Other external content fetching

The municipality’s complexity is also reflected in the fact that content is fetched from various sources for the website. In addition to PTV and AD, external content is sourced from Kuntarekry (Hollola municipality’s job vacancies), Menoinfo (local events), CaseM (minutes, notifications, other documents), and Liana Mailer (municipal newsletters). Juicer is also used to integrate the municipality’s social media posts onto the site.

Design and illustrations

Hollola’s distinctive brand identity was prominently displayed on the website. Hollola features a fresh colour palette and a wide range of icons, which were used boldly throughout the website. Additionally, a collage of icons was created to be used in the service, such as in image placeholders when other illustrations are not available.

Multisite implementation

The Hollola municipality website was implemented as a WordPress Multisite solution. Alongside the main site, the Multisite network also included the Päijät-Häme Environmental Health website. This Environmental Health site uses the same theme and elements as the main site but features a different colour scheme: green as the primary colour instead of yellow. The Multisite setup also allows for the future creation of additional separate sites within the same WordPress installation.
