Web service conceptualisation—what is it?

Concepting a web service is a critical phase in the development process of a digital service, where the fundamental idea, goals, user groups, and key functions of the service are defined. This phase lays the foundation for the entire development project and ensures that the final service meets user needs and business objectives. Concepting helps visualise the structure, functionalities, and user interface of the service before the actual development work begins.

Concept design and workshops in the spirit of Design sprint

Redandblue’s approach to web service concept design is rooted in the Design Sprint methodology, a nimble and effective way to rapidly develop and test ideas. Our workshops follow these key phases:

  1. Understand: Identify challenges and set clear objectives.
  2. Define: Determine key questions and essential functions.
  3. Ideate: Generate ideas and solutions collaboratively with the client.
  4. Prototype: Generate quick prototypes to test ideas.
  5. Test: Evaluate prototypes with real users and gather feedback.

This process ensures that we achieve tangible results quickly and can make necessary adjustments in a timely manner.

Defining a web service as part of concept design

During the concept design process, we precisely define the web service’s functionality and user flows. This phase includes:

  • User personas: Identifying different user groups and their specific needs.
  • User flows: Designing the pathways users will take within the service.
  • Functionalities: Listing the necessary functions and features required.
  • Technical requirements: Outlining preliminary technical solutions and integrations.

Accurate definition helps ensure that all project participants have a shared understanding of the goals and requirements. The client can use the new concept and definition as a basis for technical implementation tenders, making it easier to receive comparable offers with clearly described requirements.
