STEK and Sähkölä online service reforms

The online service of the electrical engineering and energy efficiency promotion centre STEK ry is aimed at those interested in the energy transition, media representatives, members of member organisations, and those seeking funding for projects and initiatives.

The website serves as a platform for applying for and granting project and initiative funding, exploring projects, and sharing project news and materials.

STEK also manages the Sähkölä.fi service, which provides teaching materials aimed at teachers, with the goal of inspiring students in natural sciences, particularly electricity and energy as phenomena.

Starting points

Before the renovation, the STEK.fi website primarily provided information about electricity and electrical safety aimed at consumers. The need for the renovation arose from the requirement to revamp the project funding application process and to better target content to funding applicants, project operators, and member organisations. The outdated technology and appearance of the previous WordPress site needed an update. With the new website, STEK focuses more on its core mission of enabling sector-developing funding and sharing knowledge generated in projects. The maintenance of consumer-targeted information has been discontinued.

Sähkölä’s website already had a clear target audience and purpose, so the renovation aimed to update its technology and appearance to the present day. Enhancing the visibility of educational materials and simplifying their maintenance were also key objectives for the renovation.

Objectives

The main goal of the renovation was to provide comprehensive information about STEK’s activities and priorities, as well as to discover and present interesting projects and related materials. For Sähkölä, the objective was to create an attractive website for its target audience, with a user experience that encourages the use of educational materials. The popularity of the new resource bank published on stek.fi demonstrates that the renovation produced engaging content. Since its launch, the site has been the second most visited page after the homepage.

Solution

The updated STEK.fi website has modernised the funding application process, application handling, and monitoring of funded projects, and has been migrated to a WordPress environment. The website now features dedicated pages for projects and initiatives, where contacts can independently update the latest materials and news. The renovation improves user experience and transparency, allows for better information sharing, and provides a broader view of STEK’s operations.

The design of Sähkölä’s website was planned to be consistent with STEK’s visual identity while still being distinct and clearly targeted to its audience. The educational materials archive enhances discoverability and improves the search engine visibility of individual resources. Filters facilitate finding specific educational materials and improve the overall user experience.

The process of updating a website is always a laborious task. With Redandblue, there was quickly a mutual understanding and trust that the work was in good hands. The process was well-planned and scheduled. Redandblue was adept at interpreting our needs and offered fresh perspectives on both the technical and visual aspects. Communication towards the client was clear, and programming skills were not required to understand it. We are very satisfied with the progress and outcome of the update project.

Technical details

The web services were implemented on a WordPress Multisite platform using Vue.js technology. A notable technical detail for STEK.fi was enabling the entire application process lifecycle and reporting through the management of user roles and permissions. Additionally, the web service includes custom extranets for different user roles and permissions, allowing for versatile management and sharing of materials with various stakeholders. The resource bank’s filtering capabilities and automatic project funding creation simplify content management and enhance usability.

Website energy efficiency

In optimising the website, particular attention was given to page load speed and energy efficiency. Image optimisation is one of the key measures for improving performance. On the website, images are displayed in a lightweight WebP format. Additionally, unnecessary loading of large images has been avoided, and the size of the first image loaded has been further reduced. CSS style sheets on the site have been minified, reducing their load time and making the user experience smoother. In designing the site, a focus was placed on energy efficiency, with concrete actions including reducing the use of white background colours and utilising servers powered by renewable energy. Our goal is to provide an accessible and efficient user experience while promoting an energy-saving approach to web development.
