Moottori.fi online magazine

Autoliitto chose Redandblue in early summer 2023 to design and implement the new Moottori.fi online service. The new service was launched in March 2024.

Founded in 1925, Moottori is an automotive media outlet published and managed by Autoliitto ry. Currently, Moottori is published in print 9 times a year, and the Moottori website features around 5 articles daily.

Autoliitto members receive the printed Moottori as a membership benefit. Nowadays, the content in the magazine and online is often different from one another. Since Moottori is primarily a member benefit for Autoliitto, some articles in the new online magazine are behind a paywall and available only to members.

Starting point and objectives

Moottori, operating separately from Autoliitto’s main website, has established a prominent and respected position in the automotive media sector. Operating under a strong independent brand allows Moottori to better maintain its journalistic approach and established reputation. Additionally, Moottori has a substantial readership that is not part of Autoliitto. Serving these readers under the Moottori brand helps to gradually build their interest in Autoliitto.

Autoliitto members are given access to all content behind the paywall. Other readers are primarily encouraged to join Autoliitto to gain full access to the articles.

Concept and definition refinement

The project began with a phase dedicated to refining the definition, where the site’s content types, page elements, functionalities, and WordPress solutions tailored to the client’s needs were detailed. This phase also involved clarifying necessary integrations, migrations, and requirements for the web service’s server environment. Autoliitto had completed the initial requirements specification for the Moottori redesign in collaboration with North Patrol, which made the refinement of the concept and definition straightforward and efficient for the project.

The refinement phase included a sufficient number of meetings between Autoliitto’s and Redandblue’s teams to ensure a shared understanding of the solution’s content and implementation.

Solution overview

The Moottori.fi service, known for its high usability, contains various content and article types (such as Test Drive, Comparison, Review, Live Tracking, Common Issues, etc.) that enable the Moottori team to publish diverse online content. These elements are designed to be user-friendly and clear for readers.

Multiple content elements were implemented for presenting content, including images, videos, podcasts, info boxes, tables, lists, and highlights. At the end of each article, readers are offered additional reading related to the same topic.

Through Moottori, users can now subscribe to either just the Moottori magazine or alternatively to Autoliitto membership. Autoliitto members have full access to content behind Moottori’s paywall.

Special features include a brand-specific search function, member login integration with the Kota membership registry, and a dark/light mode toggle that changes the site’s appearance. Additionally, Moottori’s editorial team can now publish live tracking of events, a capability not available with the previous web service.
