Sustainability

At Redandblue, our mission is to foster sustainable growth. In our strategy, business responsibility and the development of green coding expertise are at the core of our operations. Sustainability is integrated into all aspects of our business. With regards to environmental responsibility, we offset the climate impact from carbon dioxide emissions of our business operations in 2023, totalling 71 tons of CO2. An example of implementing our strategy is the Carbon Neutral certification from Koodia Suomesta, which we were awarded in May 2024.

Carbon Neutral Certification

Redandblue was awarded the Carbon Neutral certification from Koodia Suomesta in spring 2024. This certification is granted to suppliers who manage their organisation’s carbon footprint calculation, compensation, and systematic consideration of environmental responsibility in both business operations and implemented web services. We are proud to contribute to advancing sustainability in small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) and digital services, focusing on environmental impact and accessibility.

Carbon footprint calculation

Redandblue’s carbon footprint is calculated using software developed by Data Farm Oy. This software analyses accounting data in real-time from the company’s financial management application, providing monthly calculations of carbon dioxide emissions across various areas.

  • Redandblue was a finalist in the 2023 “Most Eco-Friendly Website” category with two websites.

  • Redandblue has been awarded the Carbon Neutral certification by Koodia Suomesta.

  • Redandblue uses servers provided by the Finnish company Seravo Oy, which source their electricity from renewable energy.

  • In our strategy, we are committed to producing environmentally friendly and accessible web services.

Ecological web services

Various ICT solutions account for 4-10% of annual electricity consumption and 3-5% of global greenhouse gas emissions (ICT industry climate and environmental strategy, 2021). However, the footprint of individual ICT services can be reduced by up to 90% through appropriate actions.

Redandblue designs ecological web services as standard. Our WordPress base theme, which is used in every project, includes built-in features such as caching and image optimization, which are automatically incorporated into every service we implement. The energy efficiency of web services can also be improved after publication by measuring site performance with various tools and optimising further based on the results. We have achieved good results in site performance, and in 2024, we were finalists in Grand One’s Most Ecological Web Service category with two of our works. The new Journalist Union website scores a perfect 100 points for performance on the Google Lighthouse tool.

Redandblue has its own #greencoding Slack channel and team, which enhances knowledge about environmentally friendly digital service design and implementation. New practices are adopted on a project-by-project basis, and information is shared in weekly dev and design team meetings. Through the Green ICT project, we receive consulting and concrete methods for developers and designers to reduce the carbon footprint of web services.

Green ICT project

Redandblue is one of the five companies participating in the Green ICT project organised by Tieke, TIVIA, and LUT. The project trains ICT companies in the Uusimaa region in climate-smart digital service production and supports both the private and public sectors in greener digital procurements.

Redandblue’s role in the Green ICT project has been to provide feedback on the structure and terminology of the company’s environmental responsibility self-assessment tool. This tool asks the company to evaluate its actions in three different areas: climate and environmental strategy, software production, and business and support functions.

Servers using renewable energy

For our servers, we use Seravo, whose servers are powered by renewable wind and hydroelectric energy. Seravo, as a company, has offset its emissions and claims to be a carbon-negative operator. We have also enquired about the possibility of obtaining server-specific data on the energy consumption of our web services, allowing us to measure the actual impact of the changes made.

Premises

Facilities, electricity, and heating

Redandblue’s premises are located in the recently renovated and modern Siltasaari 10. Electricity and heating are included in the lease agreement.

The Asset Manager responsible for the property, Tuomas Hulkkonen of Antilooppi, reports that the electricity for our facilities is wind power certified by Helen’s EKOEnergia. The property does not have an official RTS rating, but it has achieved a Platinum-level LEED certification and a Gold-level WELL certification focused on wellbeing.

The property will also have its own solar panels, which are expected to cover 4–6% of the building’s electricity consumption. Heating is provided by Helen’s recycled district heating, which is recovered heat. Additionally, the building has internal heat recovery systems.

Travel

To minimise the environmental impact of travel, Redandblue has a flexible remote work policy, meaning there are no mandatory office days. We prefer remote meetings if participants are located in different parts of Finland. However, to promote community and engagement, we have aimed to meet in person in the Helsinki and Tampere areas when possible. Our Helsinki office is situated in Hakaniemi, a location with excellent public transport connections, and the building provides good facilities for bicycle storage. Our landlord, Antilooppi Properties, also offers bicycles for rent for those who wish to attend meetings in the local area by bike.

We avoid air travel except for potential training trips that are considered important for the company’s development and team-building. We are aware that even a single flight significantly increases the carbon footprint of a consulting firm – this was further confirmed when we calculated our annual carbon dioxide emissions.

Equipment

We make IT equipment purchases only as needed and aim for the longevity of the devices. During our recent move, we serviced all out-of-use Apple devices and extended their lifespan by several years. New phones are purchased only if the old ones can no longer be repaired. Used phones are typically offered to staff for purchase for continued use if they change jobs.

In our phone acquisitions, we have considered switching to a service like Swappie, but currently, buying used phones for company use is not significantly cheaper than buying new ones — and a downside is the lack of warranty.

In a technology company, such a practice might be unattractive to some, as many experts prefer to use the latest possible devices. However, we have now decided to maintain older devices, provided that the performance of the device does not slow down the work itself.

Social Responsibility

Employee Wellbeing

At Redandblue, employee satisfaction has been actively measured on a daily basis since 2018. The Employee Net Promoter Score (eNPS), which gauges our experts’ willingness to recommend Redandblue as a workplace and their commitment, has reached a high of +61. Our goal is to maintain this score consistently above +50. We also use open salary tables and strive
