MuniFin digital service renewal

MuniFin is one of Finland’s largest credit institutions, providing a wide range of financing services for the municipal and wellbeing sectors as well as state-supported housing production. Redandblue served as a partner in the website renewal, which was launched in May 2024.

MuniFin is the most important financier for its customer base in Finland. Its goal is to be the key financing partner for its clients and therefore continuously develops its services to meet their changing needs. The starting point for the digital service renewal was to further improve customer journeys on the online platform.

Starting points and objectives

The digital service plays an important role in MuniFin’s communications, customer relations, and investor relations. The concept of the existing service was updated in cooperation with North Patrol, and at the same time it was decided to renew the entire platform. During the preliminary requirements specification, it was decided that WordPress would remain the publishing system, as it was considered to enable cost-effective development work.

The starting point for the renewal was the need to create a digital service that better highlights services by stakeholder and sector. The renewed kuntarahoitus.fi website also integrated the previously separate English-language munifin.fi site. The purpose of combining the two sites was to simplify content management and clarify the brand connection as part of MuniFin’s overall brand image. The renewed service was also expected to strengthen MuniFin’s employer brand and improve the overall customer experience of the digital service.

Based on these starting points, MuniFin sought a long-term partner for the development of the new service—one with strong experience in implementing easily maintainable and versatile websites, combined with a proactive approach to continuous development. The partner was also required to have expertise in designing intuitive, user-friendly, and modern interfaces. The goal of the implementation was to produce a sustainable solution that meets MuniFin’s requirements and supports the renewed concept as effectively as possible well into the future.

Refinement of the concept and specification

The technical foundations and requirements for the digital service’s functionalities and content were outlined in a comprehensive requirements specification. The task was then to refine these requirements to the level necessary for system implementation. This refinement also included defining the site’s required permission models, integrations, and migration details.

During the refinement phase, close collaboration ensured that both parties developed a shared understanding of the planned solution. As a result, the upcoming digital service was described in more detail, including its content types, page elements, functionalities, and publishing system solutions.

Design

The visual design of the new digital service was created in line with MuniFin’s brand. The design process began with developing a user interface plan for the website’s page templates and their different views. In the UI and visual design, attention was given to ensuring a consistent user experience and versatility of the various elements used to produce content. Particular emphasis was placed on mobile usability and accessibility. The design work was carried out in close collaboration with the client, with a sufficient number of iteration rounds reserved to ensure that the site’s appearance and usability met the client’s requirements and reflected the essence of the brand.

Solution description

In the digital service renewal, sector-specific information content was combined into the same service along with tailored technical solutions, such as AD login integration and the import of stock exchange releases into WordPress. Accessibility, data security, and performance were ensured throughout the project. The design focused on usability and smooth user journeys. An efficient and direct collaboration model enabled the planning, testing, and implementation of integrations together with third-party experts. As part of the project, the necessary migrations from the existing service to the new one were carried out, making content production easier for editors.

The MuniFin.fi service was implemented with several different content and article types (articles, economic reviews, press releases, reports, podcasts, etc.), allowing MuniFin to publish a wide range of digital content and highlight it to readers through user-friendly and clear elements. MuniFin produces a diverse set of expert content for its website, which required the design of clear and accessible presentation formats. To support this, a variety of content elements were developed, such as quotes, different highlight boxes, info boxes, tables and lists, and interactive data visualizations.

Redandblue

As a company, we take environmental responsibility and have calculated our carbon dioxide emissions for 2024 (70 tons of CO2), offsetting their climate impact by supporting a renewable energy project in India.
