Finnfund digital service

Finnfund is a Finnish development finance company that finances projects in developing countries in line with sustainable development.

Starting points

Finnfund’s goal is to support private sector investments by providing loans, equity investments, and expert support. Finnfund aims to promote economic growth and the creation of new jobs, as well as to develop climate solutions that help mitigate the effects of climate change and support a more sustainable future. The company operates extensively, particularly in Africa, Asia, and Latin America, where the projects it supports generate positive social and economic impacts.

Redandblue’s partnership with Finnfund began in 2020, when Finnfund was looking for a new partner for the maintenance and minor development of its digital service. At first, our collaboration focused on a service design project in which we analyzed the current state of the service and identified areas for improvement. User testing was conducted across five different continents. As a result of the project, we implemented the first improvements that enhanced the service’s usability and accessibility. However, the work was also key in designing the new service, as the insights gained could be applied to the later full-scale renewal.

Our collaboration expanded into digital marketing and analytics services, allowing us to gain a deeper understanding of Finnfund’s customers’ needs and the directions for developing the service.

In 2024, the need arose for a broader renewal of the service to meet changing user needs and modern accessibility requirements. As a result, a development project was launched with the goal of creating a more efficient, accessible, and user-friendly digital service. The new service was launched in December 2024 and offers improved functionalities for both Finnfund’s clients and other stakeholders.

New digital service

The renewal work began with joint design workshops, with the main objectives of creating a new concept and defining development needs. In earlier user testing, Finnfund’s clients and stakeholders were interviewed from different parts of the world, including Africa, Asia, and Latin America. This testing provided valuable insights into the service’s problem areas and user expectations. Based on the results, the renewal was focused on creating more user-friendly user journeys, more effective lead generation, and improved discoverability of projects and reports. Special attention was also given to accessibility and energy efficiency, ensuring the service meets modern digital service standards and usability requirements.

Finnfund’s website is an important channel for us to communicate about our services, our work, and its results. Developing communications is an ongoing effort, and we hope the new site will provide us with a solid platform to serve our stakeholders even better.

A key guiding principle of the renewal has also been responsibility. For example, we have further improved the site’s accessibility and energy efficiency.

Interactive map application and project integration

One of the most significant parts of the renewal was the development of an interactive map to present projects. For project reporting, we created a map feature using Vue technology, enabling completed projects to be filtered and searched by different criteria. This solution greatly improves information discoverability and makes the projects visually accessible even to users who may not have been deeply familiar with Finnfund’s operations before.

The projects were transferred to the new service through an integration, where data from the old service was imported in Excel format and converted into the structure used by the new system.

End result

Overall, the renewal project succeeded in meeting the needs of Finnfund and its clients by delivering a more user-friendly, accessible, and modern digital service. In the future, we will continue our collaboration with Finnfund to ensure that the service remains up to date and continues to evolve to meet the needs of a changing world and its clients.
