The Municipality of Taivalkoski’s website

Taivalkoski is a municipality of about 4,000 residents in Northern Ostrobothnia. The municipality’s new brand and identity were brought online by renewing its digital service.

The starting point for the renewal of Taivalkoski’s municipal website was to bring the municipality’s new identity into the digital service and to improve its communications. The municipal website is often the primary source of information for residents, making it a key part of the municipality’s communication. The site also serves marketing purposes in reaching potential new residents and tourists.

The goals of Taivalkoski’s website renewal were defined together in the project’s initial kick-off workshop. The main objectives highlighted were visual impact and being a forerunner — without compromising accessibility and usability.

The concept design of the digital service began with joint workshops. In the first workshop, we focused on the service’s target groups and examined analytics to understand what information users most often seek from the site. We also discussed the shortcomings of the old website to ensure these issues would be resolved in the new service. Next, we concentrated more closely on the site map and visual identity. Through multiple benchmarks, we identified the right guidelines for translating Taivalkoski’s new identity into the digital service. After the concept design, we moved on to the design phase.

Icons and illustrations

The municipality’s own icons stand out

During the design phase of the digital service, it became clear that the municipality needed a wide range of icons for both online and print use. We designed over 30 different icons for content producers. With the use of various icons and illustrations, the site was given a more distinctive and unique style and look.

Technical implementation

Content brought in through integrations complement the website

Taivalkoski’s municipal website was implemented with an integration to the national Service Information Repository (suomi.fi). For this purpose, redandblue developed a custom plugin that allows content to be created entirely from PTV data or combined with the municipality’s own content on the same page alongside imported information. This makes it possible to create very rich content when needed.

In addition, a course integration was implemented from the community college’s online service, allowing residents to browse Taivalkoski’s community college courses directly on the municipal website. Municipal announcements, decisions, and meeting minutes are fetched to the site from the Tweb system.

Previously, the municipality’s contact information had to be maintained manually, which was very labor-intensive for the communications team. In the new digital service, contact information was integrated directly from the municipality’s AD system. The data now updates automatically once per day.

End result

Taivalkoski’s municipal website is an A/AA-accessible service that showcases the municipality’s renewed identity. The service is intentionally designed to stand out from other municipal websites, while being easy for content producers to maintain and flexible for further development.
